EGIF
Version 0.35
December 1988
----------------------------------------
EGIF is a tool for converting GIFs with arbitrary color scheme
(especially "continuous-tone," photo-quality images) to EGA
"grey-scale" GIFs.
I am releasing EGIF at this point in time because although there are
several improvements I would like to make, it does not look like I
will have time to make them in the near future. Some of these
possible improvements:
o support for color output
o assembly language coding for faster conversion
o real documentation
o real error support/recovery
Any other suggestions for improved or added features are welcome.
Please note, however, that EGIF is FREEWARE. I don't ask you, the end
user, to send me money or even register your copy. In return, I ask a
few favors of you:
o please do not modify either the EGIF program or this
document
o please copy EGIF around to anybody who might find it to
be a useful tool
o when copying EGIF, please ensure that this document is
included
o please throw any suggestions, thoughts, or comments my
way (kirk johnson, tsunami bbs, 415-726-2726)
o do not charge ANY money (beyond possible costs of media)
for EGIF
---------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER
Of course, since EGIF is FREEWARE, it also comes with no warranty. It
is provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, either expressed or
implied, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of
mechantability and fitness for a particular purpose. The entire risk
as to the quality and performance of the program is with you. Should
EGIF prove defective, you assume the cost of all necessary servicing,
repair or correction. In no event (unless required by applicable law)
will I, Kirk Johnson, be liable to you for damages, including any
lost profits, lost monies, or other special, incidental or
consequential damages arising out of the use or inability to use the
program.
---------------------------------------- HOW TO USE EGIF
Just run EGIF from the command line. It will prompt you for any
necessary information (input file name, output file name, etc.).
When you are prompted for input, the default answer (shown in square
brackets) can be selected by pressing ENTER. For example, if prompted
with:
Input file name [foo.bar] _
To accept the default input file "foo.bar," you could press ENTER. Of
course, any other file name can be used by typing it and then
pressing ENTER.
---------------------------------------- RELEASE HISTORY
0.35 Initial release (Dec 88). Grey-scale output. Includes support
for both regular and interlaced GIFs, GIFs containing
multiple images. No real error recovery (just crashes, burns,
and gives you back to the command line).
----------------------------------------
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I hope you find EGIF to be a
useful and usable tool.
Kirk Johnson
